Safety tips
For buyers
- Always see the item before you pay. Never pay a deposit to “hold” something for you.
- Meet in a busy public place such as a shopping centre, or at a police station during the day. Take someone with you.
- For vehicles, check the VIN and engine number against the papers, ask for the registration certificate, and consider a police clearance and a roadworthy test.
- For rentals, view the property in person and never pay a deposit before you have signed a lease and met the landlord or agent.
- Be careful with prices that seem too good to be true.
For sellers
- Only hand over the item once the money shows in your own banking app. Proof-of-payment emails and SMSes can be faked.
- Never share an OTP, PIN or password. SmousPlek will never ask for them.
- Be wary of buyers who offer to overpay and ask for the change back, or who want to send a “courier”.
- Don’t let strangers into your home alone. Show items at the gate or in a public place where possible.
